Migration of applications and data: An overview of the REMIS project

Abstract

This paper deals with the migration from relational to object-oriented database technology. This involves migration of data as well as migration of applications. Different approaches regarding single aspects of this subject have already been developed, but we will show that these approaches can hardly be integrated and often are not suitable for migration purposes. Therefore, we have chosen another approach. The foundations and the goals of our project REMIS (REMIS is an acronym for Reengineering and Migration System) are described here. First results, especially in the areas of schema transformation and generation of meta data, are presented.
